SPLIT PERSONALITIES, CATS AND DEATH by Felipe Acevedo

We wanted to develop listening and reading skills. And in order to do that we used audiobooks in the resources center.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde
“The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde can be seen at various levels. As a story, it talks about the concept of good and evil that exists in all of us” (Department of Psychiatry, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh).
It`s a gothic story that was written by Robert Louis Stevenson, He is a recognized writer around the world because of his books, such as The Devil in the Bottle (or The Bottle imp) and Treasure Island.
The novel begins by telling us about the characteristics of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Utterson, and this description tells us that the space-temporal context is the 19 century in London.
Just thinking about “body changes” is a fantastic idea. However, we can see changes in some people caused by surgeries, but it isn`t the same to what happens to the main character.
Maybe you remember an episode of “Sylvester and Tweety” in which Tweety drank a potion and he turned into a monster. That episode was inspired in the book “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” because it tells us about split personalities, in which the bad side and the good side are divided.
The difference between the novel and the cartoon is that in the novel the bad side wins while in the “warner Bros” cartoon the good side is the winner.
The Marvel Comics Mr. Hyde was inspired by the original novel of Robert Louis Stevenson. But nowadays we know the second version of the novel was written by him, because some people think that he burnt the first version that he wrote.
Talking about literary analysis, it is a novel with decorate style and it has a cyclic time.
There are many examples where you can see a psychological rift between good and bad, like The Black Swan movie performed by Natalie Portman. In this movie we can identify the duality of a character in a theater play that affects the actress rationality, because she begins to explore the dark side of his personality that stands out ever more strongly.
The Black Cat:
It is a short story that was written by Edgar Allan Poe, in which the main character is the narrator, and it has a lineal time.
Who shows us how his love for animals turned into fear and then into hate because of alcohol, he specially hated his cat until killed him after take him one of his eyes away.
On the other hand because of this addition he killed his wife and hide her body behind a wall of his house`s basement together with his cat, which later betrayed his owner.
The Masque of the Red Death:
“…Everything from the significance of blood over the impor-tance of the number seven in mysticism to the meaning of colors can be traced in this tale, which must also be read as an allegory…”(Kristina Maul-Friedrich-Alexander-University, Erlangen-Nürnberg)
It is also a book written by Allan Poe in which the author shows how prince Prospero`s and his friends try to run away from death, caused by weired illness.
Such disease consists on blooding until dead, the prince and his friends where locked in a castle for about six months. However, things don´t go as the prince expected since death were represented by a man wearing a red mask and who killed every body.
I think that we need to read very types of stories in the resources center to learn grammar and vocabulary at the same time.
The books referred before are located in the same period of time and belong to the same context.
A split personality is the main element in these stories; in general terms, it results is very interesting since endings are not predictable so the stories guarantee entertainment during the reading.
In conclusion, you must read these stories¡
